This coal is most likely from a coal ship that sunk outside Grand Travers Bay. The original coal dock resides in Traverse city and is now called the Discovery Pier. All of this coal was recovered from Cathead Bay and the surrounding beaches. Many ships sunk in the early years due to the rough waters around the Grand Traverse Lighthouse. A lot of big ships sought safe harbor in Grand Traverse Bay during heavy winds and storms. Still true today as was then. Just a little history.......
